Where to Buy the Best Modern Furniture

If you want your house to look clean, classy and welcoming, you may want to switch around furniture and change the way that you take care of storage. If you are trying to make the most of the space you have, there are some simple things that you can do to assist in your plight.

There are some great furniture tricks, for example, switching around bedroom furniture can help make your room look bigger if you place more items of furniture against the wall, thereby creating a large space in the middle of the room. Storage should be easy.

If you are just waiting to move into the more perfect home that will have more closets, a bigger garage or attic, or perfect built-in storage, you can end your search and organize your belongings and furniture so that you have more space without paying.

You should start your storage project by deciding what you really need in each room.

You can find standard open wall shelves of any size at a home improvement center for an inexpensive storage solution for books and decorative objects.

A structured wall unit or entertainment center can house books and electronic equipment and provides space for decorative displays. If you’re going to stay in your home for a while, you might want to invest in custom-made shelves or cabinets. Any of these solutions gives lots of storage space without protruding too much into the living area.

Make sure that you get rid of things that you do not use by donating it, or at least moving it into the garage or basement, out of sight.

Once you’ve decided what you really want and need in each room, look around the room for areas of storage. Is there any open, empty space? Make sure that you do not just look on tables or closets. Look at your furniture, your bed, your closets, your cupboards. Any open space can be potential storage space for you.

Do you see an open space in a china cabinet, under a sofa table, or under an entry table? Use this space to stack wooden chests, beautifully covered cardboard boxes, or lidded baskets to store memorabilia, magazines, family photos, games, videos or computer disks.

In addition, you should try to increase storage space by enclosing shelves and cupboards behind doors. Instead of using an open one, choose a bookcase with doors. A twelve inch deep shelving unit gives great storage without taking up much floor space.

Choose a table for the end of a sofa or beside a bed that has a closed base with drawers or shelves rather than spindly open legs. Find a knee-hole desk with drawers for files and office items rather than an open writing desk.

Sos, Sos, Outdoor Furnitures Need Some Help!!

Wood is meant to be outdoors. Trees grow in the great outdoors, so it makes sense that furniture made from trees should be kept outdoors. It is no wonder that wood furniture, when treated and cared for properly, can last outdoors for years. So don’t be late and start taking care of your outdoor furniture by some of the ways provided below:Types of wooden furniture to buy

As we all say, it’s better to start right then fight. The best and good way to protect your wood and make it last for years to come is to buy special kinds of wood which suits outdoor like your garden, swimming pool, etc. Treated wood is one such type due to its resistant to rotting from the key elements like water, moisture, etc. But one of the problems with treated wood is that it often comes green, giving you limited options and scarily can more easily distort than other types of wood.Teak outdoor furniture is a popular and the best choice for outdoors. Teak wood is an extremely dense hardwood and is often praised for its durability. It also has natural oils that protect it from the elements, even when left untreated. Often grown in east Asian countries like Indonesia, Teak is very resistant to attacks by termites and other harmful insects because the high oil content makes it water repellent Other types of wood suited for outdoors are Oak furniture like Chinese oak is a dense hardwood and is a natural light wood. The tannic acid element in Chinese Oak wood makes it ideal for use in outdoor furniture because it is naturally resistant to attacks by fungi and insects. Whereas Red Cedar, especially Western Red Cedar is a very popular choice for outdoor furniture because of its beautiful color and finish. It is also naturally resistant to decay and insect damage when exposed to rain, sun, heat, or cold all year. When properly treated, Red Cedar furniture may last for decades in the harshest of environments.

Nowadays blends of wood and metal furniture’s the best suitable for outdoors. Wooden top made out of teak with cast iron or steel as support or base is the best combination for outdoors. Aluminum, UV treated frames with wooden tops. This hybrid outdoor furniture’s gives you a quality of wooden element and less maintenance required metallic touch. Know what affects your furniture

Taking care of wood and wooden furniture especially outdoor furniture goes far beyond cleaning and dusting. Wood reacts to environmental changes, such as moisture, temperature, light, frequent usage, reactions of food spills, etc When it comes to weather and environmental conditions, obviously, the utmost importance is to maintain awareness of the weather patterns in your particular locale.

For sunny outdoors, sun can have extremely detrimental effects on wood and wood finishes. Ultraviolet rays can destroy a piece of beauty in a matter of a few weeks to months. These rays penetrate the molecular structure of the finishes, the color, and the wood itself. In this process, color will change rapidly. In this situation, It is best to keep wood away from direct sunlight in all cases. If this is unavoidable, use blinds, shades, or UV window protection to keep the sun from directly shining on your wood product. For a outdoor full of humidity and moisture can also have adverse effects on furniture. Wood, whether finished or not, absorbs whatever its surroundings have to offer. If the outdoor is most of the times wet or humid, then its better to use protective waterproof covers which easily blend with the furniture or best keep them under sheds or temporary artificial roofs. If outdoor furniture is kept in your garden, avoid standing wood legs directly on grass. The moisture from the ground may rot untreated wood over time. If your garden is such that you truly can’t avoid this, at least give wood legs some extra protection by standing table and chair legs in treatment of wood preservative several times so that as much solution as possible gets soaked into the wood. Also a dry outdoor will shrink wood and eventually cause it to split from lack of moisture. In this case, giving a good finishing which suits your furniture types before the dry weather starts is the best way to protect your outdoor furniture. Natural oil like teak oil furnishes keep your furniture wet from inside and makes it live in dry weather. Lastly the outdoor furniture should be situated in an area that will allow the look you want, but yet safe from the sun and extreme temperature variance. Also, avoid placing outdoor furniture directly in front of fireplaces or barbecue grills. Some preventative Care and Maintenance

Lastly, before you start protecting your outdoor furniture, following list of tips and guidelines can help you further with your work;

Clean your outdoor furniture twice every season by simply wiping down with a cloth wrung from a soapy solution of mild washing-up liquid and dry very thoroughly afterwards. If your furniture is close to a pool or spa, use a hose pipe to wash them once a week, as chlorine is a risk to most wood. If possible, it is best in the long term, if you get into the good habit of wiping outdoor furniture with a dry cloth every time you go to use them. This gets off pollen or fine strands of grass that have found their way to your furniture and dried on rather than got blown away.

After you had a party in your garden or in the event of spills make sure to clean up all of the liquid, as opposed to just a quick wipe. Unless the sun is shining that day, never assume that it will take care of drying it thoroughly. If the wood takes all day to dry out, airborne pollen or other dirt may get a chance to form an invisible yet sticky film on your furniture surface. When varnishing or giving finishing to your outdoor furniture, try to avoid on top of screw fittings. The shrinking and swelling due to weathering as explained above will require the tightening of the screws is present any, and this could be a cause of worry if that area is gummed up with varnishing.

Hopefully, with a good investment of your time and personal touch, your outdoor garden and patio furniture will be with you, being part of your every family event till you gift them to your children.

Norwegian Furniture – Spotlight on Jens Ekornes

Ekornes is a European furniture manufacturer located in Norway. What’s interesting about Ekornes is that it is based in a country with just over four and half million people roughly the same population as the state of Colorado. However, their accomplishments in high-end furniture have become realized across the world. In this article we’re going to take a look at the Norwegian man who founded Ekornes and examine the rich history of a company that started from humble beginnings, endured hardships through world war two and embraced modern technology to create furniture unlike any other.

Jens Ekornes started his business in 1934. He started out in a small building located in Sunnmøre, Norway with three employees and some German made machinery. His business was that of building steel springs for the booming mattress and furniture industry. Business was doing quite well for Jens and he became interested in branching out from building furniture components to actually building the mattresses themselves. Not satisfied with many of the current mattress building techniques, he attended a furniture show where he discovers a British sofa mattress that consists of linked steel springs with coils on each side. He is impressed by this design and believes this same technique can be applied to conventional mattresses. With the aid of his shop foreman he sets out to design and construct a new mattress which would become known by its brand name Svane®.

Between the years of 1935 to 1939 Jens Ekornes made the rounds in showcasing his new design through different furniture shows as well as retailers and steadily his orders and workforce increase for the new Svane® line of mattresses. He soon begins opening new factories to help take on the added business from the new mattress lines and things seem to be going pretty well for Jens Ekornes… until war erupts in Europe. In April of 1940 Norway is invaded by larger and superior German forces. Norway resists but is soon overcome and surrenders several months later. Jens Ekornes and his family live through the occupation. Years of hardships pass for many Europeans including the Ekornes family until finally allied forces arrive and successfully liberate Europe. In 1945 Germany unconditionally surrenders and the war in the European theater ends. In 1946 Jens Ekornes travels to the United States. His brothers watch over the business while Jens is away. He begins work in a mattress factory in the USA to become more skilled in his trade. Impressed by the industrialization and how it will help to reduce the manufacturing costs of his mattresses, he purchases equipment and hires an American expert to travel back with him to Norway to train his workers on how to use the new machinery.

From 1947 to 1959 Jens Ekornes again starts building furniture components for other manufacturers. He opens a new factory to handle wood parts and another for the purpose of creating foamed plastics. In keeping with how he got into mattresses, Jens Ekornes begins designing and building furniture and in 1966 introduces a line of club furniture that would simply become called Ekornes®. This leather furniture was met with much success which may have also been attributed to a national mailer sent to every Norwegian home and soon Ekornes® became a household name in Norway.

1971 marked an important year for Ekornes® as it introduced the leather Stressless® recliner. The success generated by Stressless chairs recliner would lead to an important expansion for Ekornes® in it’s steel and automation departments which would allow it to keep up with growing demand internationally. In 1980 Ekornes® goes global and begins to export the Stressless® line of recliners and furniture throughout the world. With several patented features which include a lower lumbar support, glide system and head feature which moves forward with the individual, Stressless® recliners established themselves with features unavailable on any other recliner in the world. By 1983, 500,000 Stressless® recliners had been sold worldwide. A remarkable and impressive feat considering the competition of high end furniture found throughout the world.

Stressless® and Ekornes® products are currently sold in over 30 countries across five continents. Stressless recliners have been joined by matching sofas, loveseats, chairs and ottomans as well as matching coffee tables and end tables. Ekornes continues to move forward with advancements in industrial technology and creating new features in every pieces of Ekornes furniture. With a rich history dating back to 1934, the legacy of Jens Ekornes lives on today in every Ekornes® Stressless® product.

Oak Bedroom Furniture: Stylish, Yet Durable

Whether you’re refurnishing your home or simply want a change; why not purchase; or rather invest in something that will both look great and last for decades. Oak furniture is increasingly popular in many households for a number of reasons including its hardwearing quality and longevity; oak wears better and lasts longer than other woods. But a good set of solid oak bedroom furniture will surely prove it’s worth, as well as being stylish and versatile in a modern home.

Oak comes in many beautiful shapes and styles and is an asset to any home. We’re not just talking about sideboards and coffee tables. Oak is a very complimentary wood in the bedroom. Imagine yourself winding down after a long day at work and retiring to the bedroom to lay on your four-poster oak bed; it sounds divine. Oak bedroom furniture’s warmth and strength makes it an ideal wood for a bedstead; something which you cannot afford to skimp on; not only that, but it sets off a room and will no doubt bring an air of style and class to your bedroom.

According to statistics the average adult sleeps for seven hours every night. That’s 2,555 hours per year; meaning that we spend an average of one hundred and six days per year asleep in our beds. This is the reason why you should invest in quality oak beds and furniture. It only makes sense, seeing as you spend one third of your year in bed. Why shouldn’t it look great?

Kids need even more sleep than adults; again that’s more time asleep, not to mention the fact that kids (especially teenagers) lock themselves away in their rooms playing and running amok. They spend all of their time in there – so, why not invest in some oak bedroom furniture for your teenager: something that can withstand a bump or two.

How about a stylish set of children’s oak bedroom furniture that includes a strong oak bed that’ll not only look great, but it’ll withstand the odd bounce. A solid oak chest of drawers that can double as a racetrack for their matchbox cars or a beautiful dresser that will compliment your little princess’ room, even when it’s strewn with dolls and makeup. What’s great about oak furnishing for a kid’s bedroom is that maintenance isn’t necessary. Oak beds will last so much longer and their versatility means that they’ll suit a wide range of décors and styles.

Bring a little style to your home with a beautiful oak set. Ideal for young families who’ll no doubt encounter a bit of wear and tear from the kids but who’ll also want to settle down in the evening and enjoy the beautiful aesthetic and timeless style of their oak bedroom furniture. In a time of recession where we need to keep an eye on every penny; it’d only be wise to make such an investment into something that you wont have to replace year upon year. Oak lasts a lifetime.

Furniture Spotlight: Stressless Recliners (chairs & Ottomans)

One of the most interesting lines of furniture available today has it’s roots established back in the 1930′s before mass production and assembly lines and before furniture was being made in such a scale as it is today. Stressless as it is referred to was born out of several popular lines of furniture introduced by Jens Ekornes a successful manufacturer of the Svane mattress and Ekornes leather furniture lines made in Norway. Stressless itself created it’s own history in 1971 and is sold throughout the world today. In this article we’re going to examine the history and relationship with it’s parent company Ekornes and the things that make Stressless different and unique from other types of furniture.

Ekornes was founded back in 1934 by Jens Ekornes a Norwegian man who started the company with nothing more than a few German pieces of machinery and about 3 employees in Sunnmøre, Norway. What started out as a business that made steel spring components for furniture manufacturers evolved through modern technology and a desire to make a better product into creating their own mattresses and furniture. Several product lines have been introduced over the years. The first product line consisted of mattresses referred to as Svane. Svane mattresses were created out of the desire to build a better mattress and Jens Ekornes and his company invested much time and travel into finding the right machinery and techniques to building high quality spring mattresses after having built steel spring components for furniture manufacturers they had the necessary skills and knowledge to take that to the next step and did in the success that soon followed in the design of the Svane mattress.

Another product line that followed after the success of Svane was referred to as Ekornes. This line was born from the infrastructure already in place that was producing wood furniture components and plastics/foams for other furniture manufacturers. The Ekornes line of stationary club furniture as it was introduced back in the 60′s filled a need for smaller, scaled down furniture that fit well into most European homes. This leather furniture’s initial introduction was a national flyer campaign used to introduce this product line to every home in Norway. The Svane & Ekornes lines did well and in 1971 a new line was introduced called Stressless. Stressless recliners were patented by Ekorne who introduced many new features never before used in the design of a recliner and it was this product that eventually put Ekornes & Stressless on the map globally for the accomplishments in this revolutionary new design for a recliner now sold in over 30 countries worldwide.

In the early 70′s Stressless recliners introduced a unique glide system that allowed the chair to move with you. The patented system featured two rollers on each side of the recliner that moved along steel poles built into the underside of the recliner adjusting to you as you move in the chair. Ekornes continued to improve upon Stressless recliners by introducing a new feature called the Plus System. It was engineered into two places the head and lumbar regions of the chair. As you reclined back the head of the chair would move forward to keep you in eye level with whatever you were doing be it watching TV or reading a book. In the lower portion of the chair in the backrest a special lumbar support was designed into the chair that would extend out to support your lower back when in an upright position and would relax back into the chair as you reclined back. These two features of the Plus System worked together and formed the correct support for both your head and lumbar area in all positions. Today’s Stressless recliners feature these same options as well as 360 degree swivel bases on the chairs and ottoman now have adjustable comfort by allowing the individual to set it stationary or allow it to move with you with its built in glide function. Stressless® products carry a 10 year warranty on all working mechanisms.

From 2001 and beyond Ekornes began developing matching leather furniture in the way of Stressless sofas, loveseats and chairs to coordinate with their popular Stressless recliners and ottomans. The look of these pieces took the same design elements used in Stressless recliners and introduced them into the matching furniture keeping the look and design consistent and as comfortable as the Stressless chairs & ottomans they were based on. Today every recliner in the line has matching pieces that can be used with them as well as low back and high back matching furniture which provides different looks and designs depending on you’re the needs of your room or living space. Ekornes continues to move forward with new innovations in the Stressless line of furniture and it will be interesting to see what new products and features will be available in 2008 and years ahead.

In this article we’ve taken a brief look at the history of the Ekornes company founded by Jens Ekornes back in 1934 and the different lines of furniture they have introduced which include the Svane, Ekornes and Stressless lines of furniture. We examined the introduction of their most successful line of furniture Stressless recliners and the unique designs and features that made this chair successful on a global scale. Finally we looked at Stressless today and the additions of matching furniture and what these have helped provide in terms of coordinating pieces for the popular line of Stressless® furniture. If you haven’t had the opportunity to sit and relax in a Stressless product I would encourage you to find a local retailer or dealer and take the comfort test™ to feel the true comfort of a Stressless product.
