ServiceMaster Clean in Arlington, TX Shares Five-Step Plan for Responding to Flood Damage

Arlington, TX (PRWEB) March 30, 2012
ServiceMaster Clean, a water damage and disaster restoration company serving Arlington, Texas, and surrounding areas of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, today released a five-step plan for homeowners and local businesses to respond to flood damage.
“As spring storm season kicks into high gear in North Texas, flash floods are an all-too-common occurrence,” says Gary Dennington, owner of ServiceMaster Clean in Arlington. “While you can’t prevent flooding rains, there are important steps you can — and should — take to minimize the damage.”
Dennington recommends following these five tips:
1) PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST MOLD AND DANGEROUS BACTERIA. Before even setting foot in your flooded home or business, put on long sleeves, pants, gloves and boots. If you suspect that you have a large presence of mold, you may want to wear a respirator. To avoid mold, dry or throw away wet items within 24 to 48 hours. Even then, mold can be hidden in drywall, HVAC systems and carpeting. You may need a mold remediation expert, such as ServiceMaster Clean, to assess the situation. If mold is found, your provider may need to cut away damp drywall, sand the wood, and take other necessary steps to eradicate the mold completely.
2) REMOVE EXCESS WATER. If the flood damage is minor, remove as much water as possible by mopping and blotting. Wipe your furniture dry, and move photos, paintings and other art to a safe, dry location. Lift draperies off the carpet, loop through a coat hanger, and place the hanger on the drapery rod. Prop up wet furniture cushions so they dry evenly, and insert small wooden blocks or aluminum foil under furniture legs. Remove wet area rugs or other floor coverings, and open closet doors, furniture drawers and luggage to speed up the drying process. Hang fur and leather items to dry separately at room temperature. Dry any remaining wet fabrics as soon as possible. Also remove any damp books from shelves, and spread out to dry.
3) PAY ATTENTION TO THE AIR. Lots of water can create lots of humidity. So if the outside temperature is higher than 60 degrees, use dehumidifiers. You can also use fans to circulate the air and enhance drying. If your water damage occurs during a cold season, turn on the heat. If it happens during the summer, air conditioning will help prevent excess humidity.
4) KNOW YOUR LIMITATIONS. Thankfully, catastrophes don’t come every day. However, their infrequency means you may be unprepared to deal with the aftermath. Take care that you apply good common sense when in the flooded area. For example, don’t use an ordinary household vacuum to remove water. Don’t use electrical appliances on wet floors or carpet. And definitely don’t enter rooms with standing water if the electricity is on.
5) CALL A RESPECTED WATER DAMAGE RESTORATION PROFESSIONAL. You need professional help to deal with the full impact of a flood. Remember, damage from the water and bacteria growth can begin within hours. So don’t wait. Call a water damage restoration expert, like ServiceMaster Clean, right away to minimize your losses and prevent unnecessary mold growth.

Furniture Buying Guide
Determine your budget.
Budgeting for furniture is a good guideline when you begin shopping to furnish your house or office. This is vital because you may be tempted to spend more than needed if you value quality and unique design(s). But a budget can keep you in line, to that extent that you may avoid spending all available funds on one piece.
Do some planning.
Before you go shopping for furniture, decide on what colors you like most, what texture would work best with your family and what designs you prefer, for instance, whether you want striped, patterned or checkered. In addition, don’t start shopping for new furniture three days before your little one arrives. Buying furniture takes time, so give yourself enough time.
Duration
Basically, most furniture pieces will be in your home for long time. Therefore, carefully choose those pieces having longevity in mind. Also consider that furniture for a baby’s room will need to be changed as the child grows. Ensure that children’s bedroom furniture comply with federal regulation and standards.
Consider your favorite furniture style.
Have a clear idea of what style you prefer attractive. Some of the popular styles include: Contemporary, Casual, Traditional, Country, Eclectic, and Formal. Today’s hottest furniture styles trends: Subdued Contemporary, Retro furniture, Updated French Country furniture and Leather furniture. If you do not know your personality, look at items around you- car ,clothes etc. They reflect your personality.
Furniture comparison.
Before shopping for any furniture, do a comparative analysis of their prices, construction and quality. Get to know their prices. Determine whether they are veneer, solid or bonded. Have an idea about the quality, not just the look.
Buy Furniture with confidence.
Get to know more about the seller before buying. Ensure also that you are protected if you are buying online. Trust your judgment.

Reasonable Leather Sofas
Most people have a preconceived notion that leather sofas are expensive. This is not always the scenario. You can find many reasonable leather sofas in the market these days. A common thing to remember is quit smoking near your sofa. The ash from a cigarette can fade the color of the leather and if burnt, it will be difficult to repair it. Secondly, liquids can mold to its structure and discolor the skin. So people should be careful while handling liquids around leather sofas.
Children and sometimes adults too carry out their work sitting in a sofa with sharp objects. Since these objects like scissors, needles or toy with sharp objects can pierce deep into the leather which will later worn into bigger hole. Even using sharp pen nib can cleave right through the leather sofa to damage it. It’s difficult to mend a hole in leather furniture which appears quite awkward.
Leather Sofa
Exposure to sunlight continuously will cause stain in terms if color. Heat sources like warmer or fireside can dry the leather and as a result crack may appear into the observation. It’s intellectual to check your sofas care guide before cleaning the leather spot or spills. A barely damp cloth should be used to dirt free small stains. Excessive use of water can again cause damage to the leather. It’s best to use leather cleaner easily available in the market adding a small amount to rag.
People use petroleum jelly on a rag and smoothly wipe it but excessive amount of use may damage the leather. A conditioner or oil can be used to clean a leather sofa few times a year. It is important to study the instruction manual provided by the manufacturer before applying any types of conditioner or oil. The products designed for it can be easily purchased by the nearest store. Reasonable leather sofas can be a great value for you money.
Chesterfield Furniture for Sale
There are lots of places where you might expect to find a piece of elegantly detailed leather furniture. From the homes of the wealthy, to ritzy hotels to the offices of the money moguls, each room begs for the look of sophistication and class in the décor. You certainly would not be surprised to find some of the best Chesterfield furniture in one of these places. After all, it is classic and classy. You might, however, be surprised at some of the places Chesterfield’s unique style and class can be found making appearances of late.
Nightclubs in New York, Coffee Houses in Los Angeles and a very up-scale suite at an extremely gaudy Las Vegas Casino are just a few spots where you can hob-knob with people of all classes and do it while sitting on a buttoned-up bit of Chesterfield. While I am not sure they make barstools or other novelty items in the unique buttoned leather that is the Chesterfield signature, they might well be doing so soon.
Another place where you might not expect to find this upscale bit of household furnishing is in the ordinary, middle-class American home. Oddly, more and more of us seem to be taken with these almost stodgy looking sofas, chairs and divans. While they won’t go in just any house, you might be surprised at how easily a nice Chesterfield wing chair or davenport will look mixed with Colonial American or French provincial furnishings. I especially like pairing the leather of the Chesterfield furniture with the rough-hewn, woodsy look of the Tex-Mex south of the Border style so popular in dens and family rooms today.
It might be classic and it might look great in the Oval office, but today’s Chesterfield line is pushing the envelope and sliding right into some of the coolest, hippest places in the country. Maybe your house is next?
Why Leather Will Always Be ?In’
Leather has always been one of the most important natural materials known to man and, even in this age of innovation and technology, leather’s universal appeal, durability and versatility is unsurpassed.
There is no other material out there, natural or synthetic, that can compete with the strength of leather that is at the same time soft and supple to the touch, making it the ideal material for a range of purposes.
Leather, together with wood, was the basis of early man’s technological ability and it didn’t take him all that long to craft clothing, shelter, leather bags, sandals and other adornments out of the skin of the animals he hunted or reared. Although modern man has made huge strides in most other aspects of life and civilisation, leather remains one of the most coveted and sought-after materials, especially leather harvested from more exotic animals.
Unlike a couple of decades ago when cow-hide was chiefly used for the manufacture of leather jackets, boots and leather belts, there has been a trend towards suede and leather furniture. Leather is robust and has the propensity to last for prolonged periods of time without losing its shape, texture or form.
Properly tanned leather is not only easy to keep clean, it also has the natural ability to resist water although it is advisable to oil leather shoes and any other items that are exposed to wet weather with natural oils or Dubbins.
The durability of leather was recognised very early on and the Romans even used it to protect their centurions in battle. Both their shields and the heavy, protective jerkins were made out of leather, as were their sandals. Early man even used hide or leather as their first note pads and today precious books are bound in leather so that they are protected for generations to come.
Today, it is the hides of exotic animals like snakes, sting rays, emus and crocodiles that are becoming more and more popular. The wonderful textures, patterns and colours of ostrich leather, crocodile leather and snakeskin leather make them the ideal material for a range of accessories and clothing
Fortunately, in the modern era, where there has been a concerted move towards the farming of these animals specifically for their leather, products made out of exotic leather are becoming more and more affordable to the man – or rather the woman – in the street. Today, as it was thousands of years ago, leather remains the preferred choice of the discerning in our society for its warmth, look, durability and versatility.
Qualities of a Good Leather Sofa
These were considered to be one of the luxurious and pricy furniture pieces which were out of reach of many people in the past. But today the wide variety and ranges have made it possible to get a reasonable leather sofafor his home. Most popular is the black colored sofa which has always been the favorite of many in the old times also.
Usually middle class still perceive leather furniture to be a high end purchase and do not check the market for them. There are a number of options from where you can pick a nice leather sofa in your budget. Although lower prices give you somewhat a compromising deal but if you wait a little you may find a discounted good piece. Leather has always given comfort, durability and style to the interiors and its popularity does not seem to be lowered in the next hundred years.
Leather Sofas By Designer Sofas 4 u
Fabric sofas are not of the same quality and they wear out way before time. A good leather sofa can stay with you your entire life time if properly maintained. Cleaning it is also much easier than a fabric or cane sofas so you pay only once and enjoy the benefits for many years for sure. Leading feed leather is least treated so is the best as the natural material is intact giving more room for air to pass through it. It adds more life and comfort to the seat as well. Split leather is some what a lower quality but if you are a budget conscious person it can be a good choice for your house. It is treated many times so it gets a little sleek look but is still quite comfortable and durable.
Having a good leather sofa gives a sense of pride achievement to most of the people as it has always been a symbol of good taste and class.
Norwegian Furniture – Spotlight on Jens Ekornes
Ekornes is a European furniture manufacturer located in Norway. What’s interesting about Ekornes is that it is based in a country with just over four and half million people roughly the same population as the state of Colorado. However, their accomplishments in high-end furniture have become realized across the world. In this article we’re going to take a look at the Norwegian man who founded Ekornes and examine the rich history of a company that started from humble beginnings, endured hardships through world war two and embraced modern technology to create furniture unlike any other.
Jens Ekornes started his business in 1934. He started out in a small building located in Sunnmøre, Norway with three employees and some German made machinery. His business was that of building steel springs for the booming mattress and furniture industry. Business was doing quite well for Jens and he became interested in branching out from building furniture components to actually building the mattresses themselves. Not satisfied with many of the current mattress building techniques, he attended a furniture show where he discovers a British sofa mattress that consists of linked steel springs with coils on each side. He is impressed by this design and believes this same technique can be applied to conventional mattresses. With the aid of his shop foreman he sets out to design and construct a new mattress which would become known by its brand name Svane®.
Between the years of 1935 to 1939 Jens Ekornes made the rounds in showcasing his new design through different furniture shows as well as retailers and steadily his orders and workforce increase for the new Svane® line of mattresses. He soon begins opening new factories to help take on the added business from the new mattress lines and things seem to be going pretty well for Jens Ekornes… until war erupts in Europe. In April of 1940 Norway is invaded by larger and superior German forces. Norway resists but is soon overcome and surrenders several months later. Jens Ekornes and his family live through the occupation. Years of hardships pass for many Europeans including the Ekornes family until finally allied forces arrive and successfully liberate Europe. In 1945 Germany unconditionally surrenders and the war in the European theater ends. In 1946 Jens Ekornes travels to the United States. His brothers watch over the business while Jens is away. He begins work in a mattress factory in the USA to become more skilled in his trade. Impressed by the industrialization and how it will help to reduce the manufacturing costs of his mattresses, he purchases equipment and hires an American expert to travel back with him to Norway to train his workers on how to use the new machinery.
From 1947 to 1959 Jens Ekornes again starts building furniture components for other manufacturers. He opens a new factory to handle wood parts and another for the purpose of creating foamed plastics. In keeping with how he got into mattresses, Jens Ekornes begins designing and building furniture and in 1966 introduces a line of club furniture that would simply become called Ekornes®. This leather furniture was met with much success which may have also been attributed to a national mailer sent to every Norwegian home and soon Ekornes® became a household name in Norway.
1971 marked an important year for Ekornes® as it introduced the leather Stressless® recliner. The success generated by Stressless chairs recliner would lead to an important expansion for Ekornes® in it’s steel and automation departments which would allow it to keep up with growing demand internationally. In 1980 Ekornes® goes global and begins to export the Stressless® line of recliners and furniture throughout the world. With several patented features which include a lower lumbar support, glide system and head feature which moves forward with the individual, Stressless® recliners established themselves with features unavailable on any other recliner in the world. By 1983, 500,000 Stressless® recliners had been sold worldwide. A remarkable and impressive feat considering the competition of high end furniture found throughout the world.
Stressless® and Ekornes® products are currently sold in over 30 countries across five continents. Stressless recliners have been joined by matching sofas, loveseats, chairs and ottomans as well as matching coffee tables and end tables. Ekornes continues to move forward with advancements in industrial technology and creating new features in every pieces of Ekornes furniture. With a rich history dating back to 1934, the legacy of Jens Ekornes lives on today in every Ekornes® Stressless® product.
3 Tips for Cleaning Leather Sofas
We have a set of leather sofas, which I love because of its durability and looks, and because of this, it is especially great with kids. But lets face it, even though they are very durable, with kids around the house, occasionally things are spilled, and for some reason, most of us lay people are nervous about how to clean our leather. I think the fear is cleaning up a spill, using the wrong product and leaving a dark stain on our sofa that we don’t know how to get rid out. We have all probably seen those ugly leather stains, they ruin the look of leather sofas, chairs and ottomans. Leather furniture is too expensive to ruin with an unsightly stain. But there are basic ways to clean your leather that does not need to be a mystery. Here are three basic tips to help you out when needed.
One, remember that leather is a natural material that is designed to initially repel liquids, this works to your advantage. Any spills should be blotted, not wiped – this just spreads the liquid. A dark spot will be left behind once the bulk of the liquid has been removed, but this it normal. It is liquid that was absorbed. Often times this will naturally evaporate, leaving no trace of the mishaps. Obviously, the longer it takes to clean up a mess, the more liquid that was absorbed, and the longer it will take to evaporate dry.
Two, if you have a more serious spot that doesn’t evaporate (more than water is often spilt), try cleaning it with a moisturizing, non-acidic soap (think mild, skin sensitive bar of body soap) or saddle soap. You do not want to lather up with a lot of water and soak your leather more. Instead, get a cloth wet, lather it a bit on the bar of soap and then rub it on the stain. DO NOT use circular motions, but back and forth OR side to side. Once you have worked over the stain pretty well, use a damp cloth to wipe down the area, rubbing in only one direction and then buff with a dry cloth. I have also seen recommendations to not wipe with a damp cloth, but just buff with the dry one, I just feel better going over it with the water only damp cloth, perhaps removing some of the excess soap. Regardless of how you do it, next you have to let the spot air dry. You may not know if the stain is gone from your leather sofas until after it dries, if it is not completely gone, then you may need to repeat the entire procedure.
Three, and this is very important, do not do the above cleaning process until you have tested it on an obscure area on the leather sofas first! You want to make sure that the soap you are using will not mar the leather surface, or make the stain worse.
Hopefully these tips will help you when you need to clean your leather sofas. With a little care and some basic rules, you can keep them looking like new for many years. After all, the life span of a leather sofa or chair should outlast fabric upholstery by four times. Though I find that the best way to preserve my furniture is to have a basic rule of no food or drink. No one thinks they are going to spill, but it happens to the best of us. And though I may ignore my own rule sometimes, as I tell my kids, it is better if I have a mishaps than if they do!
