Designing a kids bedroom can be an ultimately fun and enjoyable process. The hardest part of the decision making is to choose what type of theme to opt for, with choices such as boating, castles, football, fairytale and history the choices are literally endless. Naturally any theme will mean matching furniture such as the bed, wardrobe and cupboards, creating a space that will be enjoyable and relaxing for kids.

Of vital importance is to include kids in the decision making process. As a parent it is important to find out whether there is a particular colour they like or a certain thing they are into. Remember that kids are often susceptible to fads and hence kitting out the room in their favourite thing may be inadvisable, in a month or so they may not like Postman Pat or Thomas the Tank Engine. Fundamentally it is advisable to keep the theme flexible, choosing a bed, and other furniture should reflect this flexibility at all times.

Additionally the theme will most likely have to reflect gender roles. For instance a girl will be more attracted to a fairy or princess bed and a boy will be more inclined to choose a bed and design that reflect a boat or racing car. It is possible to adapt a theme however for both genders, for instance a medieval theme can support both boys and girls, while the boys can have knights on the walls, girls will like princesses and flowing fabrics. Once again including kids in this process is the most advisable course of action when attempting to find a suitable design solution.

If you are stuck for ideas on what type of themes to go for here are a few pointers that will help you in finding the perfect bedroom design:

Nature is always popular with young kids, this could be adapted to be a jungle or the desert, an enchanted wood or even an under the sea theme.

Space is predominately popular with boys although there are some budding young female astronomers out there. Decorating the walls and bed with pictures of the sun, moon and stars can be good, as can planets hanging from the ceiling.

Animals are always a good option; adorning shelves with plenty of cuddly toys can make a room look like a zoo.

For a more simplistic theme utilise colours or even the entire spectrum. This type of design is excellent as it can be easily adapted as the child grows and tastes change.

A movie or TV show theme is a good idea although care should be taken as tastes with this sort of thing change rapidly. As previously stated forking out for a bedroom adorned with the latest TV show can be expensive and soon disliked.

Sports are always popular amongst youngsters. Naturally football or a favourite team can make a decent theme for a bedroom. There is even the opportunity to include pictures of the child’s favourite player.

Fantasy themes can include pirate ship bed design or a farmyard and even a fairytale wood or castle; even a boat bed for those who may want to be naval adventurers in future years. Ultimately the choice should be left to the kids.

These themes are just an idea of what is possible. Through deliberation with the child creating a space that is liked by both parent and kids is a very real and attainable possibility. It does not have to stop there however, including children in the decorating process will add to their love of a room and help in making a space that is loved by all.

Question number four asks how much space is available in the room. Obviously, this is one of the most important pieces of information. This will determine the size and number of pieces you decide to buy for your home office. Personally, I have a medium sized room, about 20′ x 15′ devoted to this project.

The last question is also very important and will decide the final look of your office when it is finished. I have always been more partial to modern furniture with sleek lines and smooth finishes.

Now that I’ve answered some crucial questions I can start my online search for home office furniture with a good idea of what I’m looking for. The Barcelona chair was originally designed for the Spanish King and Queen in the year 1929. Its creator Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe along with the architect and designer companion, Lily Reich had designed it for the Deutscher Werkbund Pavilion at the Barcelona World Exposition for the crowned heads’ official visit. The Barcelona chair symbolized the modern revolution in designing. Its inspiration was drawn from the mélange of the campaign and the folding chairs belonging to the archaic epoch. Similarly the Eames chair exudes a warm invitation to relaxation. The designers Charles and Ray Eames were the husband-wife duo who was pioneers in making contribution to the varied designing fields of the modern era. The Barcelona chair is not easy to design. The difficulties are endless whereas the potential is enormous. The upholstery used in the Barcelona chair is the highest quality of leather that is tan or black in color. The cushions of the seat and the back are hand made by sewing 40 small panels. The cushions are made of foam rubber. The Barcelona chair is priced at $1000. However its aggressive pricing has never been a detriment in its production. This is because with each year the production and sales are rising.

The Eames chair represents the design concept of “the negative of the posterior”. It is a magnificent sculpture from its designer and was originally made out of plywood. Later Charles Eames used fiber glass and his creation was the first successful venture of using fiber glass- reinforced plastic for the general use. The main aim was to provide a chair that was less expensive. The contemporary Eames chairs are also available with leather as upholstery.

The Eames fiber glass chair provided solution to the problem – “how to create a seat from a single body-fitting shell” when the Eameses’ were struggling to make something better. In the present-day, Eames chair is considered one of the most significant creations of the 21st century.

The creators of both the Barcelona chair and Eames chair had one vision in front of them – to provide people with comfort, luxury and warmth. This motivation resulted in the conception and design of the two most wonderful pieces of furniture. A blend of ancient warmth and comfort and a modern vision can be seen in the chairs.

When we speak of early 19th century “Paris” porcelain, we think, smart.  For smart indeed, was this period of smart, sharp design.

A period of neoclassic design, the return to the classic, or, “with a high regard for classical antiquity”   Historically speaking, the period finds its origins at a much earlier date, in 1765, with the move towards the great symbol of classic, ancient Greece and Rome, with inspiration especially derived from Roman copies of Hellenistic sculptures and particularly through engravings, for instance, in Wood’s The Ruins of Palmyra. Even Greece was all-but-unvisited, seen as a rough backwater of the Ottoman Empire and dangerous to explore.

This 18th century neoclassicism was really derived from the “idea” of the ancient classic period. The “classic” period is generally understood as the apex of Greek civilization circa 500 BC, with its emphasis on proportion and harmony. 

Enormous interest was also generated for this smart neoclassical style by the beginnings of archaeology and the excavation of Greek vases in the south of Italy, which became models for new types of ceramics, i.e., Wedgwood’s jasperware in England (for which John Flaxman did many designs) and Sèvres porcelain in France.

This very smart period of design is spread across a time line from 1765 until its decline, about 1830. However, throughout this period of approximately 65 years, constant revivals of the style developed.

From 1796, the chaos resulting from the French Revolution began to subside giving way to the equally, politically unstable period known as the Directoire. It was from this period of design, still with its emphasis on the classic that the French Empire style evolved.

The period is known as Empire, due to its identification with the first French Empire and the reign of Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France (1795 – 1815). The Napoleonic style was agrandiosised by symbols of Roman imperial power. The Empire style originated in the desire of Napoleon to revive the luxurious majesty of Imperial Rome, even Interiors, such as at Fontainebleau were redesigned  to include classical columns, molding, and other Greek and Roman motifs.

All French art, architecture, painting, furniture, dress and design, including silver and porcelain, evolved into one of the most smart and stylish periods of designs ever seen, the style swept Europe with its influence seen from London to St Petersburg.  The style has never been surpasses, characterised by its understated simplicity, restraint and purity of form.

An outstanding example of this stylish period is “Paris porcelain”. Rarely, if ever, has the form and decoration of European porcelain reached such standards of quality.

Many are the names of the famous Paris factories, many owned by French aristocratic families. These factories were mostly situated in, or near the city of Paris; however, there were a number of small factories in addition, all making hard-paste wares that are generally known as ‘Paris Porcelain’. These were all started after about 1770, and some twenty or so different makers came and went between that date and 1830.

Much of the actual porcelain was, in fact made at Limoges and sent to Paris to be decorated.  Paris is more renowned for its small porcelain decorating studios than for the production of porcelain itself.

 It was on 16 June – 19 June 1815 that the Empire of Napoleon Bonaparte fell at Waterloo and the Bourbon monarchy was restored under Louis XVIII.

This period, known as the “Restauration” period, was for the most part closely aligned with the former Empire styles, formal, fine lined, elegant neoclassic.

We see the final days of the classic French Empire style towards 1830, with the close of the reign of Louis XVIII

The appeal of this French Empire, classic style, has never subsided. It is constantly revisited to provide new inspiration to all aspects of design, both interiors and fashion.
