ART DECO

1930s revisited, with pearlescent finishes, rare woods with high gloss and opaque glass. Leather chairs with gently curving wooden arms and simple metallic lozenge details. Lalique presented inlaid cabinetry with glass handles in the sensual form of a female head, graceful and stylized, exquisitely lit with fine beams of light playing on the glass.

Sensual light reflective satin in gentle lingerie colours for upholstery, drapes and cushions; soft, fine cashmeres from Loro Piana from gossamer sheer to upholstery weight. Originally built in 1907, this former carriage house and stable was part of the historic Ayer Estate on the North Shore of Boston, Massachusetts. The ocean front estate, then known as Avalon, was built for Mr. Frederick Ayer, whose daughter, Beatrice, was courted by and later married to General George Patton. In the 1980s the carriage house was converted into condominiums, albeit uninspiring ones possessing the air of a developers white box. The homeowners purchased their 5,600 square foot condo in 2004 and commissioned the award winning Boston based interior design firm Wilson Kelsey Design to create an elegant, Old World styled home with inspiration from a French Country and European palette. It was interior designer Sally Wilson who discovered that although their original directive was traditional, it was really a preference for something more Continental that defined the homeowners.

One would imagine that a carriage house of this era would hold, at least to some degree, historic and beautiful architectural details. However, this was not the case. All of the homes architectural features – moldings, millwork, cabinetry, fireplace, etc. were designed by Wilson Kelsey Design. When the homeowners described their inclination towards French design, I referenced pictures of Versailles and used their inspiration to design scaled-back solutions that would mesh with modern living, says interior design partner John Kelsey. And because most New England stock millwork profiles are Colonial, Kelsey had to find resources who would fabricate European details.

Features within the transformed home include an authentically styled French Country kitchen with exposed brick walls, shutters, and custom cabinetry and millwork reminiscent of antique furnishings and cupboards. The client wanted the feeling of a large European country kitchen with many amenities so that the family would want to cook and spend time there. A custom built-in sofa was designed to face the new gas fireplace, and encourage lingering at the table. The owner instructed the designers to hide all the technology.Two antique chandeliers, one from Newport, RI and the other from Charleston, SC, contribute to the old world feeling that the client wanted.

The living area is a stunning French-style salon furnished with a collection of new upholstery and antiques, a newly designed but centuries old-looking cast stone fireplace, French style paneling, intricate plaster crown moldings, and an ornamental ceiling. A collection of 18th and 19th Century antiques were acquired to add warmth and character. Antique lighting, antique architectural prints, paintings, and a wall-sized antique tapestry adorn the spaces. They are quite happy here, notes Sally, They love the rich paneling and detailed moldings, complemented with Directoire and Regency furniture, gilded mirrors, Italian crystal and metal chandeliers, tapestries, and defining millwork. Here, finally, they feel at home. As a reminder of the home’s ancestry, Wilson Kelsey discovered the original blueprint for the carriage house/stable, and had it digitally re-mastered and framed for display in the new kitchen dining area. It shows a carriage room, cow stalls, horse stalls, hay area, carriage washing bay, auto washing bay, harness room, and grooms room.

The renovation of this home has garnered Wilson Kelsey Design over ten regional and national design awards including The Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America New Englands 2011 award for Best Residential Interior Design and Interior Renovation. The Bulfinch Award recognizes individuals and firms who preserve and advance New Englands classical design tradition. The project appeared on the cover of New England Home magazine and is featured in the 2012 Spring issue of North Shore Magazine. Celebrated for creating elegant, yet genuinely livable homes, Sally Wilson, ASID and John Kelsey continue to garner acclamations for their design talents.

Urban Design Group (UDG), an award-winning architectural firm, just released 3-D renderings of their new office space currently being built out in the Prominence Building, a 19-story, Class A office tower strategically located in Buckhead. Urban Design Group is serving as their own interior designer and AHA Engineers is providing mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection (MEPF) services. Both firms are using Revit 2011 by Autodesk to develop the designs, plans and 3-D models for the project. UDG will be moving in April 2012, and the firms new address will be 3475 Piedmont Road, Suite 1200, Atlanta, GA 30305.

UDG is an industry leader in using Building Information Modeling (BIM) in the design process as well as leveraging it as a powerful tool to enhance ongoing facility management. When it came time to design the firms new Atlanta studio, the design team was eager to use Revits advanced 3-D modeling capabilities to enhance their designs. By using the same version of the software, the design team could easily pass drawings back and forth and benefit from clash detection to see potential problems. With the 3-D models, the design team can visually confirm everything fits together as planned.

How UDG Used BIM to Enhance Interior Design:

UDG used Revit to create a virtual model of their space. Revit helped UDG better design the space, visualize how complex details flowed together and collaborate more effectively with their consultant.

As the Principal in Charge of Design, Ken Rhyne, appreciates having a tool that helps ensure design objectives are being met. Our goals for the space are to create a sense of arrival, generate a feeling of movement and motion throughout the space and naturally draw visitors through the space, said Rhyne, Principal with UDG. We strategically placed design elements throughout the space to produce a sense of surprise. The 3-D modeling helped us make sure we placed the little surprises in the right places and treated the design correctly.

The advanced 3-D modeling capabilities also allowed the design team to incorporate many creative elements in the ceiling. We wanted a mix of open industrial-looking areas with exposed ducting and piping contrasted by finished soffits in unexpected shapes, explained Rhyne. Revit helped us visualize the complex geometries of the elements to ensure we created smooth transitions. It would have been far more challenging to address these issues in a traditional 2-D program, and Revit gave the design team the opportunity to ensure our concepts were hitting the mark.

UDG and AHA used the clash detection feature to easily see problems between the ceiling elements and the mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) systems. Revit helped illustrate how the design of different layers of ceilings and mechanical components and lighting elements flowed together.
